Chapter 16: The Beggar

“Ho! Youngsters these days are truly rude! To have such foul expressions before a defenseless old man…”

None of us were baited by the Beggar Lord’s words. Even then, we could tell he was not wrong. A loud curse emerged from my right, as Nala went on guard. She’d seen the same thing I had. Leon muttered softly under his breath, and he, too, moved into a position of combat. The three of us formed a triangular formation, with me in the center at the head, Leon slightly behind to the left, and Nala to the right.

We didn’t move. We didn’t speak. We didn’t even dare breathe. The old man before us was an existence none of us were prepared for. Untouchable, he was called. Besides Maman Brigitte’s husband, I did not believe I’d have any reason to contact any of the individuals called the Three Untouchables. I did not believe I’d meet yet another person whose level was too high for me to be able to fathom.

“What do you want?” I asked.

A chuckle escaped the Beggar Lord’s mouth. He closed his eyes, placed his hands behind his back, and approached us in the manner of an old man, walking with a slight limp.

“I was wondering what sort of individual would be in possession of the Hierophant Card, but to think it was merely some youngsters…” the Beggar Lord rubbed his chin.

The Hierophant Card?

“Oh?”

A hand landed on my shoulder. My breath chilled. The Beggar Lord stood behind me, in the middle of our formation. I did not sense him move. I did not see him move. A cold bead of sweat ran down my spine.

“It’s not on you?” the Beggar Lord murmured. “Troubling.”

The man vanished out of the periphery of my vision once more. He reappeared several feet away, still stroking his beard.

“Tobias, are you certain he’s the one?”

The boy, Tobias, nodded his head enthusiastically. “Yes, Master. I swiped the card from his pocket. I didn’t know what it was at first, but if it weren't for the Guede, I’d have gotten it.”

“Ho… those Guede…” the Beggar Lord clicked his tongue. “As the young say, I have no beef with you, ho, ho! Tell me where the Hierophant Card is, and this old man will leave be on his way.”

“Hierophant Card?” Leon snapped his gaze at me.

The situation was terse. Gaviria was related to Firel, and Firel was an acquaintance. Giving her up would not be in my best interest, because we had a working partnership and she owed me a nice hefty sum I intended to collect. The last thing I needed was for her to renege on that deal because I’d exposed the secret of the Hierophant Card to this old beggar.

“Neo?” Nala turned to me.

“I may be old, but I’ve yet to fully master the true patience that comes with age,” the Beggar Lord announced. “The Hierophant Card is something I’ve been in search of for too long. If you do not wish to tell me where it is, I’m afraid this old man may do something drastic.
